Generally, motorized scooters have a set of defining features that differentiate them from power chairs. Scooters are steered using a tiller that directs the front wheel. Forward and reverse power are controlled by two thumb levers, requiring sufficient arm strength to depress the levers and steer the tiller.

Scooters’ seats are mounted on stems which allow them to rotate side to side, making it easier for users to mount and dismount. Scooters also have a baseboard rather than footrests, and users must have adequate leg strength and balance to keep their feet safely on the baseboard when the scooter is in use.

• Will the scooter need to be transported in an automobile?

  Auto lifts are devices that attach to the interior or exterior of a vehicle to easily transport a mobility device. However, some motorized scooters are easily foldable, often eliminating the need for an auto lift. Foldable scooters are especially helpful for individuals who want to bring their scooters on airplanes, buses, or other public transportation.

• Will the scooter be primarily used indoors or outdoors?

  Medical scooters may have three wheels or four. While either can be used both indoors and out, three-wheeled scooters are ideal for use indoors as they have enhanced maneuverability to handle sharp turns and small spaces.

  Four-wheeled scooters have wider bases, making them ideal for uneven terrain outdoors. Some models are available with high clearance and heavy-duty tire treads for use on, especially rugged terrain. The wide base increases the turning radius for four-wheeled scooters, making them more difficult to maneuver indoors or in tight spaces.
