Aging in Place

The Nursing Home Alternative

Most people plan to continue to live in their homes, even as they age. But what happens when you have trouble climbing the stairs or feeling safe in the bathroom? Thankfully, you have options! 101 Mobility believes that allowing seniors to age comfortably at home is an ideal alternative to assisted living facilities and we look forward to making their homes work for them.

What is Aging in Place?

Aging in place means allowing a senior to live in the home of their choosing for as long as possible. Most seniors have lived in their homes for years, forming communities and bonds with their homes. While some situations may warrant the around-the-clock care that only nursing homes can bring, most seniors need only minor home modifications, such as a stairlift or wheelchair ramp, to allow them to comfortably enjoy their homes. At 101 Mobility, we believe that everyone should have the opportunity to choose how and where they live their life.

Aging at Home Versus Assisted Living

Assisted living facilities are wonderful options for those who need full-time care due to physical or mental conditions. However, many seniors consider moving to nursing homes or other assisted living facilities prematurely.

  • While assisted living is perfect for some, there are many benefits to aging in place:
  • Cost – Did you know that the average nursing home costs around $80,000 per year? Yikes! The rising expenses from insurance, food, labor, etc. make assisted living an extremely expensive option. Seniors on fixed incomes may have trouble affording such high costs. On the other hand, aging in place is often much more affordable. Most homes can be made comfortable with only a few modifications – the total cost is typically under $10,000. Considering many seniors own their homes without any mortgage payments to worry about, the cost of staying home is often minimal.
  • Community – Many seniors have lived in their homes for years – sometimes decades. Their homes hold memories and their communities are part of their identity. Moving to a new home can be intimidating or uncomfortable.
  • Independence – Living at home means seniors can have friends and family members visit whenever they want, whereas many assisted living facilities put restrictions on visitors.

Aging in Place Resources

  • In addition to our home modification services, there are several other ways in which you can make your home easier and more comfortable to navigate. We've provided a few resources below that we invite you to take a look at:

  • Home Safety Checklist – We’re now offering exclusive access to 101 Mobility’s home safety checklist to ensure that you or a loved one has all of the bases covered. We normally only provide this to our customers, so all that we ask is for you to provide an email address and phone number. You can opt-out at any time.
  • NIH Resources – The U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) has a segment called the "National Institute on Aging" which is dedicated to resources to help seniors age more comfortably. Click here to access their aging in place resources.
  • Canadian Resources – The Government of Canada provides resources akin to the NIH. Check out their helpful statistics, a booklet, and more.
