Fraud Never Sleeps: Protecting Hall County Seniors from Financial Scams and Check Fraud
At 101 Mobility of North Georgia, our mission goes beyond helping older adults safely navigate their homes. We believe that maintaining independence also means protecting seniors from the financial scams and fraud schemes that can threaten their security, confidence, and quality of life.
That’s why our team recently attended “Fraud Never Sleeps,” an educational event hosted by North Georgia Senior Resources (NGSR) featuring the Fraud Prevention Team from Peach State Bank and a representative from local law enforcement.
As part of our commitment to serving as a trusted local resource, 101 Mobility joined senior industry professionals, community partners, banking professionals, and local law enforcement representatives from Hall County, Gainesville, and across Northeast Georgia to learn about emerging fraud threats and practical ways to protect older adults and their families.
Fraud Is Getting More Sophisticated
One of the biggest takeaways from the event was that scammers continue to find new ways to target older adults.
Some of today’s most common scams include:
- Bank impersonation calls and text messages
- Medicare and healthcare scams
- Identity theft
- Phishing emails and text messages
- Grandparent scams
- Check theft and check washing
Many of these schemes are designed to create a sense of urgency, making it easier for criminals to convince victims to act before verifying information or consulting with a trusted family member or professional.
Why Check Fraud Matters
A topic that generated significant discussion was the rise in check fraud.
While many transactions are now electronic, many seniors still prefer paper checks. Unfortunately, criminals know this. Checks can be stolen from residential mailboxes, intercepted during delivery, or altered through a process known as “check washing.”
When making larger purchases such as home accessibility modifications, taking extra precautions can help protect against fraud.
How 101 Mobility Helps Protect Customers
When families invest in a stairlifts, home elevator, wheelchair ramp, patient lift, or other accessibility solution, we want them to feel confident throughout the process.
That’s why we offer secure payment options including:
- ACH transfers
- Credit card payments
- Debit card payments
- Secure electronic invoicing
For customers who prefer paying by check, we can often coordinate direct pickup during a scheduled appointment or installation rather than asking families to place large payments in the mail.
It’s one small way we help reduce the risk of check theft while providing additional peace of mind.
Accessibility Scams Are Real Too
Unfortunately, scammers don’t only target bank accounts.
Families searching for accessibility solutions should be cautious of companies that:
- Demand large deposits upfront
- Lack local references or service support
- Offer pricing that seems too good to be true
- Disappear after the sale
When evaluating an accessibility provider, it’s important to ask:
- Is the company local?
- Do they service what they install?
- Are warranties clearly explained?
- Can they provide local references?
Working with a trusted local provider can help families avoid costly mistakes and ensure they receive support long after the installation is complete.
Working Together to Protect Seniors
We are grateful to North Georgia Senior Resources (NGSR) for organizing this important event and to the Fraud Prevention Team from Peach State Bank and local law enforcement for sharing their expertise.
