101 Mobility Experiences the Ultimate Adventure at MDA Summer Camp
MDA Summer Camp is a magical, weeklong adventure for kids with neuromuscular diseases and conditions at Camp Carefree in Stokesdale, NC. This summer, our very own Jack Shoemaker, owner of 101 Mobility Triad, along with 101 Mobility’s social team enjoyed a day at camp with the Muscular Dystrophy Association campers, counselors, and sponsors. Reporting back with photos, video, and insider information, Jack wants everyone to know there is no limit to the awesomeness that is MDA Summer Camp – but here are 4 things that make this place extra special:
1. The People: Talk to everyone, ask questions, and make lifelong friends!
At MDA Summer Camp there is a 1:1 camper to counselor ratio to ensure a good n’ safe time had by all! Counselors are a mix of active-duty Marines, Soldiers, Airmen, area college students, and camp counselor veterans handpicked after completing a 22-page counselor application. Steve Stevcik, MDA Sumer Camp counselor of 49 years, travels all the way from Boston every year to spend time with the coolest group of kids and teens in Stokesdale. Check out the exclusive interview here.
2. The Food: Eat ‘til your heart’s content!
Enjoy three meals a day with dinner prepared by local firemen every night! Jack couldn’t stop raving about the delicious lunch provided by Bojangles for VIP Day.
3. Social Events: Mix and Mingle.
Jack and the 101 teams attended MDA Camp on VIP Day – a day in which all MDA friends and sponsors are invited to see what camp is all about. At VIP Day, we played Fluffy Bunny as campers counted one marshmallow after another, learned how to dance the Wobble, participated in carnival events, and received a first-class tour of Camp Carefree’s accessible lake, horse ring, petting zoo, outdoor pavilion, and decorative cabins!
During the tour, we learned that VIP Day is just the tip of the iceberg. Every day campers participate in wild and crafty events like building a scrap raft and sending counselors out on the lake and getting dressed to the nines for MDA Summer Camp’s grand finale – Prom.
4. The Great Outdoors: Explore uncharted territory.
Camp Carefree works to make the outdoors accessible for everyone. The site features a gorgeous lake with several accessible piers sprawled over acres of forests and farmland. Whether visitors choose to explore an accessible pirate ship, feed llamas, ride ponies, go fishing with local firemen, or take a dip in the totally accessible in-ground pool, they are sure to have a blast!
